Casket Manufacturer New Spray Shop Facility

One of the UK’s leading manufacturer of standard and bespoke caskets and coffins has just installed a significant finishing facility from Schuberts.

With a 48 hour turnaround and safe in the knowledge of a business that has Guild of Master Craftsmen Accreditation, this customer needed to significantly elevate their paint facilities and reduce work in progress.

Everything is hand-crafted inhouse, from standard to highly customised caskets, so whatever system was installed, it needed to deal with volumes and high quality.

Two double Schubox units with integrated flash-off pre-chambers were installed for staining, base coating and top coating their standard ranges.

A full system was installed for the bespoke and special ranges, running from dual control systems with HMI touchscreens.

The operators have a fully enclosed paint kitchen mixing room, with bunded floor, permanent extraction and filtered air input. Here they mix all the colours, catalysts and thinners to the correct levels.

The spray booth enclosure has a full auto-balance system, filtered air input and Andreae filters on the extraction. The PLC within the system detects when the filters are becoming clogged and alerts the operators to change either input or extract filters. This means the system always performs way above the minimum HSE levels.

Once coated, the products move into a clean, filtered flash-off zone. The coatings vent, flow and settle in this area before moving into the custom Schubox to dry and cure.

This Schubox is very much a custom build, with bi-foold doors along the same length, meaning product can be easily and quickly brough back into the spray booth for recoating or into the sanding zones for denibbing.

After 30 mins in the Schubox at 40c, the coatings are cured and ready for fitting up and despatch.

Everything installed here will run with solvent and water based coatings – a truly flexible system!
